Hippopotamus also known as “hippo” are very large animals growing up to 4.5 meters and can weigh a whopping 8000 pounds. On land they can run, reaching speeds of 20 miles per hour. These Huge animals are mainly active on a night making them (nocturnal) and spend most of the day bathing in water. Their mouth is very big and they have long teeth this helps them eat large foods very easy.
Did You Know…
Hippos were once thought to ‘sweat’ blood, this is untrue but they do carry a red pigment in their glands, which makes their sweat look like blood and acts as a sunscreen.
Diet – Fruits including bananas, and grapes, as well as carrots and hay and lots more crops.
